1.  Cattle Health

The Committee has a key role in monitoring and advocating for producers interests in the area of cattle health as the State Government are responsible for animal health regulations.

The Government appears to be changing their approach to the management of animal health regulation, there are two particular changes identified by the Cattle Committee:

  • A push towards great user pays for the Government’s intervention of disease control, via user pays for government services
  • Managing animal health with ‘risk based” framework rather than regulatory framework.

These changes to the Government’s management of animal health issues are causing some concern, to varying degrees to the Association’s membership. The key objective of cattle health is:

  • Delivering an Akabane vaccine to NSW Cattle producers
  • Advocating for the development of a surveillance map identifying incidence ACORN Calf disease
  • Progress the north coast tick issues
  • Advocate for a national framework for the management of BJD

New Approach to Bovine Johne’s Disease

From 31 March 2008 new rules affecting Bovine Johne’s Disease will come into effect. For beef producers who only ever purchase cattle from pure beef herds there will be little change. However those who buy cattle from dairy holdings will now have to take greater responsibility. Please see the following links for more information. It is really important that all beef and dairy producers read this information.
