2.  Animal Welfare

Animal welfare as it relates to the cattle industry is growing in political significance and will absorb increasing amounts of Australian industry’s time and money. This means that we have to constantly monitor changes in public and government perception of what constitutes animal welfare and the associated cost and requirements.

Animal health and welfare is of high importance to the people managing and working in cattle production. Livestock must be cared for in the appropriate manner in order to grow and be suitable for reproduction and sale.

Animal Welfare incorporates a multitude of elements:

  • Production indicators
  • Stress (physiological) indicators
  • Disease and sickness
  • Behaviour indicators.

The Cattle Committee will be working to ensure that the elements (outside disease and sickness which are addressed else where) are managed based on scientific information.

The key objective of animal welfare activities is:

  • Direct MLA research and development to promote producer and industry interests
  • Advocate for producers interest in the changing regulatory arrangements at the state and federal level.
