Water

The Association has been an extremely active participant in the water debate. CRM continues to have input into the development of national water policy, including the National Water Initiative, via representation on the NFF water task force and the Industry-wide Water Group (IWG). The IWG made recommendations to the Commonwealth Government regarding the National Water Bill 2007 and hosted a major national meeting with the Commonwealth Minister for the Environment and Water, the Hon. Malcolm Turnbull on this Issue. The Association has been involved in other discussions including that surrounding the Murray Darling Basin Bill, the National Plan for Water Security, and the Achieving Sustainable Groundwater Entitlements program. The Association key issues are those surrounding both irrigators and dryland farmers, this includes the status of water sharing plans and the preservation of stock and domestic rights.

The objectives of this priority area are to:

  • reform the IPART process to remove upper bound pricing and ensure contestability of charges
  • ensure more effective and equitable implementation of the National Water Initiative
  • introduce an efficient national water accounting and trading information system
  • highlight opposition to proposed development of Kangaloon aquifer
  • mitigate the socio-economic impacts of the cuts to carryover water in the Murray and Murrumbidgee Valleys
  • Formulate information on eastern fall water issues with a view to developing Association policy
  • Maintain members basic rights to stock and domestic water supply
