Speakers Bureau – Telling Agriculture’s Story

The NSW Farmers Association has launched our Speaker’s Bureau to tell agriculture’s story. This is a new initiative by the Association to promote a greater understanding of farm life and agricultural issues with folk living in urban communities. Chief Executive Shaughn Morgan encourages members to sign up as a speaker with the Speakers Bureau to help us tell agriculture’s story.

Future farming on the north coast

North Coast farmers can look forward to more storms, more wind, higher temperatures and less spring rain, according to Department of Primary Industries (DPI) project officer Greg Reid.
While this outlook may appear gloomy, Mr Reid does believe climate change will present more opportunities for north coast agriculture as world commodity prices improve and less rain falls inland.
Speaking at the Region 13 Convention in Coffs Harbour, Mr Reid said posed the important question ‘climate change- ready or not?’
He says north coast farmers can prepare for climate change through grazing management, building soil carbon and whole farm planning.
"It's not about maximising your profits in the good years, it's about minimising your losses in the poorer years," he said.
“The coastal region will still have its bad years, so we have to be careful not use marginal land and manage our soils and landscapes to build resilience to climate change.”
He said some north coast farmers are already preparing their properties and the popular ‘Farming for Climate Change’ workshops are helping them to achieve this.
'The Future of Farming on the North Coast' was the theme at the recent NSW Farmers' Association's Region 13 annual convention.
The forum featured industry experts on farming for climate change, biological farming, land use planning and alternative wealth creation.
