Better regulation of agricultural chemicals reform

On 25 September, the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) released a revised draft Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals Amendment Bill 2012.

The new draft bill is a revision of a draft bill that industry provided comment on earlier in 2012. It is understood that the Government intends to introduce the Bill in the spring sitting of federal parliament.

DAFF has also proposed that changes to the regulation will be released at the same time and that the draft regulations will go on exhibition for a period of three months.

NSW Farmers is concerned that the revised draft bill has not adequately dealt with the concerns raised by industry in response to the initial draft bill, in particular the proposal to require costly re-registration of agricultural chemicals and increasing the complexity in minor use industries obtaining permits to use agricultural chemicals.  Submissions in response to the revised draft bill are required by 22 October.
