Certainty delivered with water buybacks cap

Confirmation that water buybacks under the Murray Darling Basin Plan will be capped by the Federal Government was good news, NSW Farmers Association said today.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Environment Simon Birmingham confirmed the news in the print media today.

The government will cap the amount of water to be recovered from buybacks to 1500GL - a significant amount of which has already been purchased under the previous Labor government.

NSW Farmers water spokesperson Helen Dalton said: “We have long stressed to government  the importance of achieving balance between the environment and irrigation communities.”

“We have consistently called for water planning regimes based on triple bottom line (social, economic and environmental) outcomes.

“We also want to see a balanced and effective Murray Darling Basin Plan and improved resourcing and maintenance of public water storages and related infrastructure.

“Confirmation that buybacks will be capped is a positive step in applying these principles. It will go a long way to delivering certainty for irrigators and the communities they support,” concluded Ms Dalton.
