Energy seminar in Sydney for primary producers

14 July 2014

NSW Farmers is providing a free farm energy efficiency seminar in Sydney this week on energy price stress and measures to control energy costs.

Farmers and those with an interest in a farming business will be able to learn how best to go to market and negotiate good electricity and gas contracts, as well as developments and opportunities in energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies.

Topics will include machinery and efficient diesel use, pumping and irrigation, heating and cooling technologies, solar PV and solar hot-water.

Attendees will also be able to learn about energy planning, better energy purchasing and the upcoming changes in electricity price regulations.

Since 1 July, NSW electricity tariffs regulated by the Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal (IPART) are no longer offered and pricing on new contracts is set by retailers in reflection of the market.

NSW Farmers Energy Innovation Manager and solar PV engineer Gerry Flores said: “The deregulation of pricing increases the importance of establishing a good electricity contract or discounted deal with your retailer.”

“Our seminar will provide a chance to learn about the best ways to negotiate contracts and discounts.”

Mr Flores, along with energy efficiency experts from the consulting firm Energetics, will give presentations and be available to discuss specific issues and solutions.

“Our focus is on practical cost savings and the information we provide is drawn from our experience working with farms and other business. We find that cost savings of at least 5 percent are achievable, even for businesses that have already implemented efficiency measures,” he said.

“Far greater savings are achievable for many businesses depending on the age and kinds of equipment and the nature of existing energy contracts and deals.”

Places are limited so please RSVP by visiting tinyurl.com/farmenergysydney or by contacting Gerry Flores on 02 9478 1004. The seminar will take place on Thursday 17 July from 1:00pm at Level 6, 35 Chandos Street, St Leonards.
