NSW Farmers demand action over Shenhua

Farmers overwhelmingly endorsed an urgency motion imploring state and federal governments to take immediate action to halt the approval of the Shenhua Watermark coal project on the Liverpool Plains of NSW on day one NSW Farmers’ annual conference in Sydney.

NSW Farmers’ President elect Derek Schoen stated that, under his leadership, NSW Farmers would continue to strongly lobby the government on this issue.
“It’s time for decision makers at the highest levels to take a stand and right the wrongs of the past,” Mr Schoen said.
“This area should never have been made available for exploration in the first place. Successive governments have failed to step in and do what is needed to protect this area.

“We do acknowledge the support shown by Minister Barnaby Joyce in voicing his opposition to this project. But the fact is this project approval process is still rolling along and it needs to be stopped.

“It’s also vitally important that we demand the NSW planning system is amended in such a way that agricultural land is given due consideration and priority in the state’s planning process.

“We need to ensure that this situation never arises again,” Mr Schoen concluded.
