Oyster grower survey launched by NSW Farmers

NSW Farmers today launched a survey of the state’s oyster growers which will be used to give feedback to the association’s Oyster Committee as it sets strategic policy priorities for the year ahead.

Chair of the NSW Farmers’ Oyster Committee and Clyde River grower Kevin McAsh has called on oyster growers up and down the coast to head online to  www.surveymonkey.com/s/oystersurvey and complete the 15 minute survey.

Mr McAsh said the survey was an opportunity for all oyster growers in NSW to tell the committee about the key issues they face as a grower and the main priorities which would enable the development of the industry.

“We have a fantastic industry which is built upon the enthusiasm and hard work of growers and has enormous potential to grow and develop in the years ahead,” he said.

“Having said this, it is clearly a tough period to be an oyster farmer in NSW at the moment.  The production figures for the past 5 years show declining production, we have had severe floods on the North Coast, Pacific Oyster Mortality Syndrome has effectively shut down the Hawkesbury River and we have seen poor growth and unexplained mortalities in some regions.

“We need to come together as growers to get our industry back on its feet and to do this it is vitally important that we understand the needs of growers and act on them.

“The NSW Farmers’ Oyster Committee represents oyster growers to government and the wider industry on policy issues and we will use the results of this survey to guide that work.

“The NSW Government has recently called for stakeholder input into an Agriculture Industry Action Plan and it is important that the views of oyster farmers are taken into account.  By getting growers to fill in this survey, we can communicate a clear vision of the industry to government.

“The more responses we get from growers, the more accurate this survey will be in reflecting the opinion of growers so we encourage them to take the time to complete it and promote this survey widely to other growers,” he concluded.

Growers interested in receiving a hard copy of the survey should contact NSW Farmers’ Member Service Centre on 1300 794 000 and one will be mailed to them with a reply paid envelope.
