Animal Welfare

Animal_Welfare_ThumbnailThe Animal Welfare Committee attempts to identify emerging animal welfare issues and manage their impact. A key management tool used by government is legislation and Codes of Practice and the Committee negotiates realistic, practical and economically sustainable elements within these tools.

Despite Codes of Practice being voluntary, the Committee promotes producers' adoption of the Codes to mitigate against their regulation. The Committee has also focused on education of producers and animal welfare groups about the facts.

The Committee's objective is to provide advice to Executive Council on the Committee's brief of animal welfare. The Membership of the Committee includes representatives from extensive and intensive agriculture and Executive Council is represented by an independent member.

Priority Issues

The Animal Welfare Committee priorities are:

  1. Stakeholder involvement in the implementation of the Australian Animal Welfare Strategy
  2. Review of Legislations and Model Codes of Practice
  3. Building the welfare credibility of the Association
  4. Review of the Associations Animal Welfare Management Plan
