National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) - Cattle

The Australian red meat industries have been very proactive in the area of managing the risks associated with livestock disease and food safety.

Livestock disease and food safety have been managed by several government and industry initiatives, including food safety National Vendor Declaration, and Commonwealth livestock disease funding arrangements and more recently a livestock traceability system.

The National Livestock Identification System, or NLIS as it is generally referred to, is a key initiative in this suite of management and control tools to manage livestock traceability.

The Cattle Committee will now place its focus on monitoring the NLIS roll out and troubleshooting any problems which arise at the Government or industry level.

The key objective of NLIS is to:

  • Monitoring the NLIS roll out and work towards  a smooth implementation of the system
  • Advocate for members needs when deliberating over the expenditure of the federal NLIS funding
