Weeds & Pest Animals
The Association has been an extremely active participant in the debate on weeds. On the recommendation of the Noxious Weeds Advisory Committee (which the Association is a member of), the NSW Government recently introduced the NSW Weeds Action Program, replacing a range of noxious weed grant programs previously provided to local and public authorities. The new program targets future funding directly at outcomes in the NSW Invasive Species Plan, aiming to ensure that local weed control authorities and other key stakeholders meet the NSW Invasive Species Plan targets. As a result of lobbying by the Association, the Minister for Primary Industries re-instated Galvanised Burr on the Noxious Weeds list. As a result of the Association’s efforts, the burr can now be cleared without needs consent under the Native Vegetation Act 2003. The Association has established the Fire Weed Committee to develop a grass-roots response to the growing problems related to that weed. The NSW/ACT Serrated Tussock Working Party has also been established to take ownership of weed problems and facilitate cost effective solutions based on local initiatives. Fact Sheets
