Raising the profile of Horticulture in NSW

Hort_NSW_ThumbnailApple and Pear Industry Promotions
The NSW Farmers Association (the Association) through the Horticulture Committee has secured funding to conduct apple and pear industry promotions for 2009.

The 2009 program will introduce some additional new components to the program which will further enhance learning in the classroom and extend the message to the main grocery decision maker in the household.

This year our biggest program is planned aimed at reaching over 250 primary schools in New South Wales. The program is anticipated to occur in Term 4 of the 2009 school calendar during mid November.

Organisation for AppleQuest 2009 has included a meeting with representatives from Woolworths Limited to arrange Woolworths as the distribution of apples to involved schools across the State. Woolworths will be sourcing NSW grown produce from the major apple production regions. The Department of Education and Training, NSW Canteens Association and Sydney Markets will be involved with the program.

The Association has a range of promotional materials, they include:

  • A3-sized display posters
  • The 'one a day' super food brochures
  • Rediscover the pear brochures
  • Fridge wobblers

These are ideal for the school classroom, school canteens, food fairs, farmers market, regional field days and horticulture promotion events. To access these contact the Association for further information.

NSW Vegetable Industry Development Officer
The Association successfully secured funding and managed the NSW Vegetable Industry Development officer project since 2000, which has recently concluded in June 2009.

Alison Anderson who has been the NSW Vegetable Industry Development Officer assisted Vegetable producers to improve industry best practise and awareness of production issues. The importance of NSW vegetable production has been highlighted through Alisons work and involvement across the wider industry.

The Association would like to thank Alison for her significant contribution and support to Vegetable growers of NSW and the Vegetable Industry.

The Association looks forward to the future Vegetable Industry Development Program will run under a new arrangement with successful program managers AUSVEG Limited.

Investigating International Vegetable Production models
The Association secured funding from Horticulture Australia Limited for two international study tours. These tours have assisted members to study and investigate the Operation of Agribusiness Parks throughout Europe and Slow Food Movement throughout Europe.

Attendees visiting Agribusiness Parks in Europe created contacts and networking opportunities with a view to researching the development, planning and protection of successful agribusiness park models. This information is now being used to develop how Agribusiness Parks may be integrated into the Australian agricultural industry and using the Central Coast Plateau as a pilot.

The Slow Food Movement project involved attendees visiting TERRA MADRE a biennial conference and workshops co-ordinated by the International Slow Food Movement, learned and liaised with other farmers who are working in peri-urban areas as to their best methods of maintaining farmland close to cities and reporting to HAL and others on successful strategies undertaken by farmers in other countries so those methods can be used in Australia.

From the tours members are now working on how Slow Food Movements concepts from Europe can be adopted in the Sydney Basin.
