Grower and Market Transparency

The NSW Farmers Association (‘the Association’) Horticulture Committee is working to have a trial of its market price publishing service available soon for Members. Support was well received when the Committee conducted a survey of members to establish the development of a website. The Committee will trial the website to investigate the establishment of a fully functioning service to our members and if successful will invite interested members to participate in the trial.

The website would provide involved Members a report of actual prices received by horticulturists at farm gate.

Horticulture code of conduct
The Horticulture Code of Conduct continues to be developed and currently there are issues that need to be addressed where grower-merchant transactions occur.

From the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) 2008 grocery code inquiry, 13 recommendations to amend the Horticulture Code of Conduct were produced. The Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry established the Horticulture Code Committee to provide independent advice on the Horticulture Code of Conduct ACCC recommendations and general issues relating to the code. The whole process needs greater transparency before we can even begin to consider protecting growers’ interests in this process. The Association through Horticulture Australia Council has been very active and vocal to improve the operations of the Code.

Final recommendations from the Horticulture Code Committee are expected in mid to late 2009 with The Committee finalising its report to the Minister.
