Tractor ballasting

Australian tractors are often overballasted. Correctly setting ballast to match a tractor’s main duties can achieve fuel savings in the order of five to eight percent. Establishing correct ballast involves identifying goal weights for main operations and measuring actual weights at each axle, ideally while equipment is mounted. Once ballast is set in the right ball park, further adjustment may be unnecessary since traction efficiency can be achieved by adjusting tyre pressure. A common sense approach minimises the need for ballast changes but ensures that gross ballasting errors are avoided.
