Western Division Wild Dog Project

About the Project

AWI fund Wild Dog Coordinators in NSW, Queensland, Victoria and WA and SA (seasonally). The purpose of wild dog control coordinators is to work with woolgrowers and other livestock producers, public land managers, industry bodies, government departments and other stakeholders in reducing the impact of wild dog predation on livestock. Practices involve providing landholders with across-group coordination, removing barriers to participation or control, coordinating training or education needs, introducing technologies such as aerial or ground baiting with 1080 or other methods, and identifying issues to be solved.

Based in Dubbo, the AWI funded Wild Dog Co-ordinator is supported by producers, project officers and researchers experienced in wild dog management as well as a network of NSW Farmers Regional Service Managers. AWI along with NSW Farmers Association believe in a landscape wide approach to wild dog control with coordination/facilitation key to successful on-ground outcomes for land holders.

Where groups are being formed the coordinator will initially focus on coordination and assisting local producers and key stakeholders to form wild dog canid management groups and assist neighbouring groups to also work together.

Where groups already exist and coordination is good, the role will focus more on facilitation between stakeholders and across relationships to enable co management models to be implemented.

The aim of this project is to assist wool growers and other livestock producers and key stakeholders to work together to reduce livestock predation by wild dogs in western NSW.

The Western Division Wild Dog Coordinator position is overseen by a Project  Advisory Committee (PAC). This committee is made up of the following representatives:
- AWI Program Manager – Vertebrate Pests
- National Wild Dog Facilitator
- NSW Farmers Senior Vice president (Chair)
- Principal researcher Wild Dogs(DPI)
- Land Holder Representative
- Local Land Service representative (WLLS)
This role is also strongly supported by the DPI and the IACRC.

Please contact Bruce Duncan on 0409 515 471 if you have any questions regarding the project.
