Young Farmer Exchange
What farmers can do now to build stronger, future-ready businesses
The Young Farmer Exchange didn’t just explore the future of agriculture, it highlighted what farmers can do now to build stronger, more resilient businesses.
A key takeaway from the panel was the importance of engagement. Farmers who actively participate in industry conversations, networks and programs are better positioned to identify opportunities and respond to change. Programs like the Young Farmer Business Program, NSW Young Farmers Council and Royal Agricultural Society Youth Group are strong examples of where the next generation can connect, collaborate and share insights.
Another strong theme was confidence in using data to support decision-making. With more data, technology and information available at our fingertips than ever before, knowing how to use it effectively to improve farm productivity and profitability is key.
This is where AI and digital tools are playing an increasingly important role, but while they can support decision-making, they won’t replace on-farm judgement. Quick, in-the-moment decisions remain a core part of farming, and those who invest time in understanding and applying these tools will be better positioned for the future.
So what can young farmers do now? Panellists pointed to a few practical actions, including:
- Investing time in understanding your business beyond day-to-day operations
- Building networks that challenge and support your thinking
- Staying informed on industry trends, policy changes and emerging technologies
- Taking opportunities to learn from peers and mentors
Importantly, the session reinforced that there is no single pathway forward for today’s farming operations. Every farm business is different, and success will look different for everyone, but what matters is taking action — engaging, adapting and making deliberate decisions to strengthen your business over time.
Programs like the Young Farmer Business Program play a critical role in supporting this journey, providing access to knowledge, networks and tools to help farmers build confidence and capability for the future. Learn more here..
